Isabella Rossellini is an actress, filmmaker, author, philanthropist, and model. Rossellini is noted for her 14-year tenure as a Lancôme model, and for her roles in more than 40 films including Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her, The Saddest Music in the World, Infamous and 25 made-for-television movies/series including Alias, Discovery Atlas: Italy Revealed, Iconoclasts and 30 Rock.
Isabella Rossellini film making debut was her mischievous and witty film, My Dad is 100 Years Old, a pretend dialogue about the essence of film. In it, Ms. Rossellini appears as herself, speaks her father's words, and also brilliantly portrays Fellini, Selznick, Hitchcock, Chaplin, and her own mother, whom she strikingly resembles.
In 2008 Robert Redford's Sundance Institute commissioned Ms. Rossellini to make a series of short films to address the issues of the environment. She chose the mating habits of bugs and called her series GREEN PORNO, which has been celebrated in film festivals here and abroad currently in its third season. Green Porno: A Book and Short Films by Isabella Rossellini was released on DVD and sold exclusively with the book October, 2009. Green Porno offers a visually arresting and scientifically accurate look at the sex lives of marine animals and other creatures. This book will make you see the animal kingdom as you never have before.
There's little in life that is more delightful than Isabella Rossellini talking about the sex lives of creepy crawlies and creatures of the sea. (And certainly nothing cooler in the science world.) Where another might simply relay the information with a side of humor, Rossellini becomes her subject, whether it's sliding along the ground as a snail, suffering the challenges of having her anus pressed against her head, or partaking in the praying mantis' sex act decapitation. Best of allthe porno fun is not over! It's just getting a new name.
The Sundance Channel has announced a new Rossellini series called Seduce Me (which should appease those uneasy with the use of "porno"). Continuing her journey through the wild kingdom, the series will concentrate "on the courting rituals of nature's quirkiest, from bats to bed bugs." The first season will include the following animals: duck, salmon, bed bug, cuttlefish, and snake, airing on April 20, while the second season of critters (yet to be shared) will screen this August. In addition to the clips, they'll share behind-the-scenes videos, interviews, and photo galleries.
Rossellini as a bat? Cuttlefish? This is gonna be good . . . Watch a couple of her Green Porno videos after the jump.
In preparation for her current series (about sea creatures) and for two upcoming series for The Sundance Channel and also for Discovery, she is studying science and religion at New York University. Ms. Rossellini is also a wildlife activist and dedicated trainer of Labrador puppies for the blind.
She has written three books: Some of Me, Looking at Me and In the Name of the Father, the Daughter and the Holy Spirits: Remembering Roberto Rossellini. Her most recent films are The Accidental Husband, My Dog Tulip and Two Lovers. Between movie and film making projects, she lectures at performing arts centers throughout the United States and Canada.
Isabella Fiorella Elettra Giovanna Rossellini was born in Rome and lived her early years in Rome, Santa Marinella, and Paris. She came to New York at the age of 19 to study English and attend Finch College. During this early period she appeared intermittently on Roberto Benigni's Italian comedy show, The Other Sunday. She holds dual United States and Italian citizenship and is the daughter of the Academy Award-winning Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca, Anastasia, Autumn Sonata) and the groundbreaking, iconic Italian film director Robert Rossellini, who made film history with Rome, Open City.
Isabella Rosellini has had a successful career as a model with over 500 covers including Vogue, Elle and Vanity Fair, working with such renowned photographers as Richard Avedon and Bruce Weber.
As an actress she has worked on numerous features in both Europe and the U.S.A., most notably, Blue Velvet, Big Night and Fearless. She has recently appeared in television programs including Napoleon, Merlin, and 30 Rock.
Her first foray behind the camera was as the writer and creator of My Dad is 100 Years Old, directed by Guy Maddin. This film was included in a retrospective of her father, Roberto Rossellini's amazing body of work which screened at MOMA and on an international Cinematheque tour in various venues around the world.
